Diabetic Assessment
Is a Diabetes Assessment Right for You?
Consider diabetes assessments in podiatry care if you're:
- Diagnosed with Type 1 or 2 Diabetes
- Seeking proactive measures to prevent diabetes related foot complications
- Experiencing any foot discomfort or changes in sensation
How does Diabetes affect the feet?
Damage to the nerves of the feet (Peripheral Neuropathy):
Diabetes can lead to peripheral neuropathy, which affects the nerves responsible for feeling the ground, controlling muscles, and maintaining balance. This condition can cause symptoms like numbness, burning, tingling, and pain in the feet. It may also result in a loss of protective sensation (LOPS).
LOPS means that individuals with this condition may not be aware if they step on a sharp object, walk on hot surfaces, or develop an ingrown toenail. These situations can lead to infections and foot ulcers without the person even realising it.
Damage to Blood Flow (Peripheral Vascular Disease)
For individuals with diabetes, high blood sugar can lead to narrowed and hardened arteries, making it difficult for blood to reach the feet. This can result in decrease blood flow to the feet, slow wound healing, increased infection risk, and painful ulcers. In severe cases, tissue damage may require amputation. It's crucial to monitor foot health closely and seek timely medical attention. Regular check-ups are essential in managing and preventing these complications.
