Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave is regularly used in medicine for a variety of musculoskeletal injuries. Shockwave should be considered in addition to and always in combination with other hands-on treatment, exercise prescription and appropriate education.

Common conditions we treat with shockwave therapy

  • Plantar Fasciitis/Fasciopathy
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Lateral Hip Pain
  • Patellar tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee)
  • Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)
  • Hamstring Tendinopathy
  • Bursitis
  • Muscle Strains
  • Nerve conditions

How does Shockwave work?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that utilises high-energy shockwaves to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. These shockwaves are directed towards the affected area, creating microtrauma and increased blood flow. This leads to enhanced tissue regeneration, reduced inflammation, and ultimate pain relief.

The Three Key Phases:

Stimulation of Microcirculation

The shockwaves initiate a process called neovascularisation. This is where new blood vessels are formed. This increased blood flow promotes better nutrient supply to the injured tissue, aiding in the healing process.

Initiation of Inflammatory Response

Controlled inflammation is a crucial aspect of healing. Shockwave therapy triggers this response, encourages the body to send healing cells and growth factors to the area to accelerate tissue repair.

Stimulation of Cell Regeneration

Shockwaves prompt the production of collagen, a structural protein essential for tissue strength and elasticity. This promotes the regeneration of healthy tissue by replacing damaged cells and restoring function.

Does shockwave hurt?

It may occasionally induce some mild discomfort. It can also bring a distinct sensation of relief. Typically, a single session of shockwave therapy involves a minimum of 2500 shocks delivered to the affected area over the course of a few minutes. Following the initial 500 shocks, the treated area may experience a subtle numbing effect.

You might encounter mild discomfort after a shockwave treatment. It is important to understand that the effects can vary from case to case. These effects are also influenced by your specific condition.
